1. According to the usage of the pump on board

  1. Pumps for marine power plant
There are fuel pump, lubricating oil pump, fresh water pump, sea water pump, hydraulic oil pump,  cargo oil pump, boiler feed water pump, cooling water pump for main engine and genset.
  2. Pumps for ship safety and living facilities
There are bilge pumps, ballast pumps, fire fighting pumps, daily fresh water pumps and sanitary pumps, etc.
  3. Special marine pumps
There are oil tanker cargo oil pumps, tank washing pumps, mud pumps for dredgers, salvage pumps for deep-water salvage ships, water jet propulsion pumps for water jet propulsion ships, and fishing pumps for fishing boats.

2. According to the working principle of the pump

  1. Positive displacement pump
Positive displacement pump is a pump that sucks and discharges liquid by periodically changing its working volume by the movement of the working parts. According to the different movement modes of moving parts, it is divided into two categories: reciprocating pump and rotary pump. According to the structure of moving parts, the former is divided into piston pump and plunger pump; the latter commonly used gear pump, screw pump, vane pump and water ring pump.
  2. Impeller pump
The impeller pump is a pump that relies on the impeller to drive the liquid to rotate at a high speed to increase the pressure energy and kinetic energy of the liquid flowing through the impeller to suck and discharge the liquid. According to the different structural characteristics of the impeller and flow channel of the pump, it can be divided into marinne centrifugal pump, axial flow pump and vortex pump.
  3. Marine eductor
Marine eductor is a pump that uses a high-speed jet generated when a fluid with a certain pressure flows through a nozzle to eject the fluid to be transported.

Marine pumps can also be divided into vertical marine pumps and horizontal marine pumps according to the position of the pump shaft; single-suction pumps and double-suction pumps according to the number of suction ports; according to the prime mover driving the pump. Most of the marine pumps are electric pumps, while there also has diesel engine pump, such as emergency fire pumps, and pumps driven by the main engine itself are also called on-board pumps.
